Roger, Charlie, we're ready to rock.
I'm sitting with this woman. Let's call her the Genius. She's got 3°, she runs a company, she probably knows the actual meaning of life, and she has just spent an hour, an entire hour listing her boyfriend's red flags.
Comment and subscribe. I mean, she's become a forensic profiler on an actual budget. He doesn't make eye contact. He's too charming. He says he'll change, but he's still the same prick he was in 2022. And I'm sitting here thinking, Kieran, you're a genius, but you're also a total, absolute idiot. You're analyzing his eye contact like it's a Da Vinci Code puzzle and you're missing the fact that the floor is currently being sold from under your feet. Look, let's say it for what it is. If we could spot manipulators by their behavior, every TikTok relationship coach would be out of a job and we would all be happy.
And we aren't. And why? Because behavior is actually noise and the real signal it is the situation. So I want you to stop looking at the shark and start looking at the water, because that is where the answer lies. This is the most. Unusual. Practice. You think what you think you know with Charlie. Here is the truth that is going to ruin your afternoon. Manipulation doesn't need a villain. Oh my God, yes, I said that we love the monster narrative. It's easy. It makes us the hero. But some of the most exploitive rooms on earth are run by people who actually think they're helping.
All right, what am I talking about? I want you to think about that. Nice boss. He's family oriented. He buys pizza on Fridays. But he also keeps the budget a secret, keeps your job description vague as hell, and ensures you have 0 outside contacts. Is he evil? No. But is the situation architecturally screwed? Yes. You see, if you're standing on a 45° slope, I don't care if the person at the top is Mother Teresa or Ricky Gervais. They have the leverage. They can pull the rope whenever they feel like it.
Manipulation isn't a personality trait, it's asymmetry. It's when one person has all the cards and you're just trying to figure out if you're even allowed to play. When you look at personalities, you get confused, and that's what they lead us to believe. But when you look at leverage, everything becomes clear. Yes, you're welcome. I just gave you the vocabulary. Yes, I know you already knew that. So who has the information or who has the money or who has the exit door? If it is not you, you are not in a partnership.
You're in a trap. And though I started this entire conversation about a relationship, trust me, this is about everything. So I want you to stop playing Sherlock Holmes and start looking at that room. There are three things that tell you you're in a cage. One dependency without exit. See, this is the golden handcuffs of relationships. You rely on them for money, housing, or your sense of self worth. But you can't leave cleanly. If you go, your social circle vanishes or your finances collapse. You're you're you're not trapped by force, you're trapped by a lack of options.
A manipulator doesn't have to lock the door if they've convinced you the world outside is on fire. 2 rules that shift after you commit. See, this is the Sung cost prison. You sign the contract, you fall in love, you join the team. Then the terms change. Suddenly loyalty means doing things you never agree to, but you've already paid the entry fee, so you stay to justify the cost. You aren't staying for the relationship, you're saying to prove you weren't a sucker for joining in the 1st place. Come on man, admit it.
And three costs for clarity. See, this is the big one. In a healthy room, I'm supposed to be able to ask, hey, why did you say that and I should technically get an answer. In a manipulative room, asking a question is a betrayal. They get cold, they withdraw, they make you feel like you're a demanding bitch just for wanting to understand the rules. And boy oh boy have I been in those rooms. Here's the rule of thumb. If understanding the situation comes with a penalty fee, you are not confused, you are being managed.
Unusual practice takes you where most conversations never go. Hidden histories, counterintuitive truths, and cultural twists that flip your perspective. Deep ideas delivered short and sharp, Just minutes that feel like years of discovery. You'll learn what most people miss in a lifetime, giving you the kind of knowledge that sparks conversations, ignites debates, and makes people lean in closer. Concise, surprising and impossible to ignore. Now, for all my intelligent listeners, this is where I come in to insult you.
Yes, you. The people most likely to fall for this are usually not gullible, They're competent. Why? Because smart people are trained to solve puzzles. So when a situation is inconsistent, you don't walk away, you work harder to understand it. Bravo. You think if I just explain it better, if I just understand their childhood trauma, or if I just find the right words, I can actually fix this? Congratulations, you've just turned your brain into the lock on your own cage. You see, manipulators live competent people.
You'll rationalize a nightmare for five years just to prove you're enlightened. I'm sorry. What enlightened enough to handle it? You call your anxiety growth. You call their chaos complexity. Thank you. So much. No, Janet, this is just a bad situation. Your intelligence is not your shield. It's the bait they use to keep you engaged in solving what they keep extracting. Oh my. God. So how do you get out? How do you stop playing detective and start being an architect? You run a stress test. One, slow the hell down.
If they're rushing you into a commitment, a job, or a vision, I need you to pause. And if they panic because you stopped moving at their pace, that is not love. That is a quota 2 Say no. Pick something small and say no. A dinner, a deadline. If a small no leads to a week of cold silence or guilt trip, that would make a Catholic mother freaking blush. You're being extracted from. And three, I want you to ask for clarity. Ask a direct question if they give you a word salad or get defensive. That fog is intentional.
Healthy systems absorb friction. Manipulative ones punish it. And yes, you can use my quote. I know because I know. Now you get it many, many, many hours later. All right, let's wrap this up because you don't need to diagnose these people. You don't need to get to $250 an hour therapy to figure out why these people do what they do. Because really, ultimately, in the end, with the amount of time we've got on Earth, who the hell cares? Unusual practice, deeper than a TikTok, tighter than a book. The person doesn't have to change.
It is the Terran that just has to shift. You see, a boss loses power the second you have another job offer, a toxic partner loses power the second you have your own bank account, and the guru loses power the second you start talking to the other people in the room. Don't forget, don't like and. Subscribe.
Stop analyzing the person. Everything they taught us is so false. People change due to circumstances, due to environments, due to different things. Man, sometimes they're just in a bad mood. Have you checked out your hormones? We can do the craziest things. I want you just to analyze the room. If the room is a cage, I don't care how nice the warden is. Get the hell out. I know you're pissed. All right, but just. Listen to me for five seconds.
Stay sharp or don't. I'm not your Mama, but for God's sake, stop being an idiot. I'm Donald Trump and I approve this message. This episode just made you look around you a little differently than good. That's the point. Do not let the fog roll back in. Hit that follow button so you don't lose a signal. And if you've got a smart friend who's currently trying to solve an unsolvable puzzle, please send them this. You might just be the clarity they're looking for. I'm your host Charlie, and this has been the Invisible Cage episode number a lot.
Until next time, stay curious and peace out mom. Somebody just fired with me. You can fool some of the people all of the time, and you can fool all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool mom. Hand me your phone and go to your room.
